MORRISON-JOYCE GOVERNMENT IGNORES ITS OWN MULTICULTURAL HEALTH ADVISORY GROUP

February 01, 2022

The Morrison-Joyce Government has yet again left multicultural communities behind in its response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

While it’s been clear for months that using RATs would be vital for Australians to get to school, work and on with their lives, the Morrison government hasn’t acted to make sure that every Australian can feel confident in using RATs.

This is despite being told that this was an issue last year.

The Culturally and Linguistically Diverse Communities COVID-19 Health Advisory Group is tasked with providing critical advice to the Federal Government on the health impacts on multicultural communities:

In its meeting of November 2021, it warned:

“Self-tests have been available since 1 November 2021. Information about tests needs to be simple and available in other languages and accessible formats such as video.”

Labor wrote to Minister Hunt last month urging him to act on this recommendation.

This too has been ignored.

Yet again we are seeing repeated failures to plan appropriately, as we saw with COVID-19 health messaging and the vaccine rollout.

The distribution and use of Rapid Antigen Test (RAT) kits should have been predicted and planned for - they were warned of by the AMA in September last year.

At every stage of this pandemic, experts warned Mr Morrison of what was on the horizon, and every time he failed to listen and failed to act.

Multicultural communities have been left overexposed to the detrimental health, economic and social effects of COVID-19 throughout the pandemic.

Mr Morrison refuses to acknowledge and learn from his repeated mistakes, he has turned his back on multicultural communities.
