About the Hindmarsh Electorate

Name Derivation: Named in honour of Sir John Hindmarsh KH RN, 1785–60. Hindmarsh was the first Governor of the Colony of South Australia (1836–38).

Area and Location Description: The Division of Hindmarsh covers 122 sq km consisting: part of the City of Charles Sturt, part of the City of Port Adelaide Enfield, and part of the City of West Torrens.

Products/Industries of the Area: Aviation, cement, commercial fishing, electricity generation, flour mills, grain bulk handling, heavy engineering, major retailing, manufacturing industry, motion picture production, numerous sporting venues, petroleum storage, police academy, shipping, small industries, stevedoring, tourism, warship & submarine construction, waste disposal and wool stores.

First election this name was used at: 1903
